Course in Industrial Audiometry and Hearing Assessment
(Course Approved & Accredited by the Department of Labour)
Course overview
- 5x day course
- R7500.00
- 08H00-16H00
Noise in Industry: A Significant Hazard
Noise in industrial environments poses serious hazards, contributing to accidents, hindering communication, and causing both physiological and psychological stresses in individuals.
The Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Mines Health and Safety Act stipulates that workers who are exposed to noise levels exceeding 85 dB (A) in their work environments to undergo initial and periodic hearing assessments to prevent potential impairment.
This course is designed to equip audiometrists, supervisors, management, and training personnel with the essential knowledge and skills necessary for the effective management and operation of hearing assessment facilities. Inaccurate hearing test results can lead to costly and unnecessary referrals, impacting both individuals and organizations. Hearing impairment affects not only the individual but also contributes to significant compensation claims, which can impose serious financial burdens on companies.
Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be proficient in all requirements outlined by the Act and will possess a comprehensive understanding of:
- The physiology and anatomy of the ear
- The physics of sound
- Calibration and accuracy of testing instruments
- Administration of hearing tests
- Calculation of percentage hearing loss (Instruction 171)
- Reporting procedures
- Referral processes and STS/milestone baselines
- Hearing conservation strategies and counselling
All participants are required to register with SASOHN upon successful completion of the course to obtain certification as practicing audiometrists.
Course Structure:
- Theoretical Component:
This component is delivered through lectures, discussions, and independent study. Theoretical knowledge is reinforced through practical exercises and concluded with a final written examination.
- Practical Component:
Following the theoretical sessions, candidates will receive hands-on training to enhance their skills and knowledge within a practical work environment.
Refresher Course in Industrial Audiometry and Hearing Assessment Incl. Instruction 171 and STS/Milestone Baselines
(Course Approved & Accredited by the Department of Labour)
- 1x day course
- R1800.00
- 08h00-13h00
All audiometrists who received training prior to November 16, 2001, are required to attend a refresher course that includes Instruction 171 to register as practicing audiometrists with SASOHN. Due to ongoing changes and amendments in standards and legislation, it is recommended that audiometrists participate in a refresher course every two years.
With over 30 years of training experience, we take pride in having trained the majority of audiometrists in South Africa.
Course Overview
This course is designed to provide candidates with a comprehensive summary of the complete Industrial Audiometry curriculum, along with detailed information regarding recent legislative changes.
The Importance of a Refresher Course
Participating in a refresher course is crucial for audiometrists to stay current with evolving standards, practices, and legislative requirements. Such courses ensure that professionals remain knowledgeable about the latest advancements in audiometry, enhance their skills, and maintain compliance with industry regulations. Regular training not only helps in mitigating risks associated with outdated practices but also reinforces the quality of care provided to clients. By engaging in refresher courses, audiometrists demonstrate their commitment to professional development and the highest standards of practice in their field.
Course in Vision Screening
- 2x day course
- R4600.00
- 10H00-16H30
Vision screening is a critical component of Occupational Health, as it helps identify individuals with visual deficiencies. These deficiencies can contribute to unsafe conditions, leading to high-risk factors that result in accidents, decreased concentration, and impaired performance in the workplace.
In educational settings, such as schools and universities, the focus may primarily be on the impact of these visual challenges on attention and academic performance. It is essential to recognize that vision screening should serve as an initial assessment tool to identify individuals who require further evaluation through comprehensive eye examinations.
The Course Consists out of:
Physics of light
- Anatomy and Physiology of the Eye
- Pathology of the eye
- Assessment of Visual Acuity
- Color Perception
- Depth Perception
- Visual Field
- Routine Instrument Checks
Course in Spirometry
- 3x day course
- R6210.00
- 08H00-16H00
We appreciate your interest in our comprehensive range of services. Our holistic approach encompasses the operator, medical practitioner, and quality control program.
The following services are offered:
A – Training
- Spirometry Training Course
- Spirometry Refresher Course
B – Details of the 3 Day Spirometry Course
- Each student will receive a complete course manual.
- The training course complies with SANS 451:2008 and aligns with the Spirometry Unit Standard SAQA 252125.
- The program spans three days:
- Day 1: Comprehensive theory
- Day 2: Theory, practical sessions, and hands-on equipment training
- Day 3: Revision and written assessment
- Candidates must achieve a minimum score of 70% on the test and complete an assignment that includes 10 patient results illustrating acceptable and repeatable spirograms.
- Candidates will be assessed based on their assignments and, upon successful completion, will receive a competency certificate.
- Those who do not pass may arrange to retake the test within two weeks for an additional fee.
- The training equipment used meets and exceeds the standards set by ATS-ERS 2005, ATS/ERS 2019, and SANS 451:2008 (South African National Spirometry Standard).
